The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game that is played by two or more players. The objective is to win a pot of money or chips by betting over a series of rounds. The best ranked hand wins at the end. You can also make other players fold in later rounds by putting pressure on them, even if you don’t have a good hand yourself.

When playing poker you should always know the rules thoroughly, especially when starting out. This will ensure that you play within the framework of what is legal and fair in a poker game. It will also help you avoid making mistakes that can cost you a lot of money.

At the start of the game, each player “buys in” with a certain amount of money, called poker chips. Each chip has a specific value, with white chips being worth the minimum ante or bet, and red chips being worth more than that.

After everyone has bought in, a round of betting starts once all players have 2 cards. The first person to the left of the dealer must place a mandatory bet called the blinds into the pot before you can begin betting.

A player can choose to say a number between 1 and 10 to indicate how much they want to bet. You can also say “raise” to add more chips or money into the pot, or simply “call” if you wish to match the last bet made by another player.
